If you need urgent support

I do not provide an emergency or crisis service — but if you are in distress and need someone now, you do not have to wait for me.

If you or somebody else is in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you cannot speak safely on the call, press 55 when prompted and the operator will know you need help.

In a mental health crisis

Camden & Islington Mental Health Crisis Line — 0800 917 3333, free, 24 hours every day. Other areas have their own crisis lines, or use NHS 111 below.

NHS 111 — call 111 and select the mental-health option for urgent mental health support anywhere in England, any time.

Samaritans — 116 123, free from any phone, 24 hours every day, or email jo@samaritans.org.

Shout — text SHOUT to 85258, a free, confidential 24-hour text service, if you would rather not speak.

SANEline — 0300 304 7000, 4pm to 10pm every day.

National Suicide Prevention Helpline UK — 0800 587 0800, or 0800 689 0880 if you cannot connect, 6pm to midnight every day.

CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) — 0800 58 58 58, 5pm to midnight every day, or their webchat.

PAPYRUS HOPELINE247 — for anyone under 35, or concerned about a young person: 0300 102 2470, or text HOPE to 88247, 24 hours every day.

Switchboard — the national LGBTQIA+ support line: 0800 0119 100, 10am to 10pm every day, email hello@switchboard.lgbt, or their webchat. Every call is answered by a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Abusive relationships

National Domestic Abuse Helpline — run by Refuge, for women: 0808 2000 247, free, 24 hours every day, in confidence and in many languages.

Men's Advice Line — for men experiencing domestic abuse: 0808 801 0327, Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm.

Galop — the LGBT+ anti-abuse charity, for domestic abuse, hate crime and sexual violence: 0800 999 5428, or help@galop.org.uk.

Karma Nirvana — for forced marriage and honour-based abuse: 0800 5999 247, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Racism, antisemitism and hate

Stop Hate UK — 24-hour confidential support and reporting for anyone affected by any form of hate, in the areas they cover: 0800 138 1625.

CST (Community Security Trust) — for antisemitic incidents: 24-hour emergency line 0800 032 3263, psychological support helpline 0800 032 8477.

Tell MAMA — for anti-Muslim hatred: 0800 456 1226, or WhatsApp 0734 184 6086.

Victim Support — free, confidential support for anyone affected by crime, including hate crime, whether or not it was reported: 0808 168 9111, 24 hours every day, or their live chat. You can remain anonymous.

About the images

The wild leaves on the home page were photographed while I was lying on the ground on Hampstead Heath. All other photographs were taken at a remote cottage in Scotland with no electricity, apart from Banjo and the small shelf of books, photographed at home in London.
